The Standard Model of particle physics (SM) is an extremely successful theory, describing the fundamental building blocks of nature and the interactions between them. Despite its many successes, it is known that the SM does not provide a complete description: for example it does not explain the abundance of dark matter in our universe, known to exist from astrophysical observations [1–3]. One of the main aims of the physics programme at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)[4] is to find evidence of new phenomena, either via directly searching for the signatures predicted by specific scenarios beyond the Standard Model (BSM) or, as is the case in this paper, by performing a more general search for deviations from SM predictions.
