Summary Even after the so-called “crisis of representation” in ethnographic-sociological research the representation of other cultural practices constitutes the focal point of its own scientific practice. Although ethnographic representations are now conceived of as realizations of cultural practices little has been said, from a methodological point of view, about the instruments with which ethnographic representation is performed. Starting from the distinction between epistemic and technical objects this paper discusses two aspects which constitute ethnographic research: first, the switch between the perspectives of documentarism of the ethnographic data, on the one hand, and the relativism of a reflexive understanding of scientific practice, on the other; second, an irresolvable incompleteness of ethnographic interpretation and representation. Both aspects are discussed using as examples the pragmatic notion of writing and audio recording devices in ethnographic research.
