The Hemerobiidm, as understood by most authors, are divided by Handlinsch into several families : Dilaride, Osrnylidre, Polystoechotide, Sisyride, Nymphesidre, and Hemerobiide. Of these, the Hemerobiide proper are abundantly represented in the lrlorth American fauna ; while (according to Banks, as shown by his recent Catalogue) we have two species af Polltstoechotes, one each of Sisyra and Clirnacia (Sisyrida), and one of Dilur. 'Ihe Osmylid.€ are not represented. In the Miocene shales of Florissant we find instead one Po/ltstocc/totes, lwo Osmylidee, and no Hemerobiidre, Sisyridre or Dilaridm. Probably not much importance should be attached to the apparent absence of several groups, but the existence of Osmylidm, an Old World grotrp, is signifrcant, and in harmony with other facts, such as the occLlrreice of a species of Nenopteridre in the shales. prefaced his account Insects, with the follorving reurarks : species agrees somewhat closely the species from pictus, referreri to this genus, but differs from it in its lvings, as rvell as in some minor of the neuration, as in the of the outer series of gradate veinlets regularity tbe of gradate
