The projected shell model (PSM) study of 98-102 Sr and 100-104 Zr nuclei is carried out. The reliability of the ground-state wave function is checked by reproducing yrast spectra and electromagnetic properties. The mechanism for the onset of sudden and large deformation at N = 60 is worked out. The present piece of research work has unified the two different, or conflicting, early explanations for the onset of deformation at N = 60 by the spherical shell model and mean-field theory.
