Trillium channellii (Trilliaceae), a new tetraploid species from eastern Hokkaido (northern Japan), is described. Evidence concerning its re- lationships with other Trillium taxa in Asia is pre- sented and discussed, and hypotheses about its or- igin are considered. The name T camschatcense Ker Gawler is presented as the correct name for the only diploid Trillium species in Asia, a taxon most commonly treated as T camtschaticum Pallas ex Pursh; the latter name was not only published in- validly but also at a later date than the former.
