Current studies of the cytology and histology of the anterior pituitary gland, using the electron microscope in examination of ultrathin sections (Rinehart and Farquhar, '53 : Farquhar and Rinehart, '54a and '54b), have revealed detail of fine vascular and perivascular structure that is of considerable interest and would appear to be of importance in relationship to nutrient exchange and hormonal secretion. The observations also have an important bearing on time-honored problems of reticulo-endothelium, reticulin and basement membranes. lnsofar as it is possible, the electron microscopic studies will be correlated with histochemical observations. One cannot properly divorce histochemical or cytochemical studies from observations on detail of fine structure. Such studies should complement each other in an endeavor to arrive at an understanding of the true nature of fine cellular organization and function. The capillaries of the anterior pituitary gland are generally considered to be sinusoidal in nature, and their lining cells phagocytic. However, studies by Cappell ( '29) established
