Alburn and Whitley (1) have presented kinetic data which indicate that the inhibition of hyaluronidase by heparin is competitive. The application of kinetic methods to the hyaluronidase system is difficult since the enzyme catalyzes both the transglycosidation of the reaction products as well as the initial hydrolysis of the, &hexoseamidic bond of the substrate. Under conditions in which the action of hyaluronidase upon hyaluronate was zero-order, so that the interaction between enzyme and reaction products was greatly reduced, and hence transglycosidation (2) was minimized, the nature of the inhibitory action of some common mucopolysaccharides was investigated.
