Two-hundred years ago J. GUNNERUS (1770) published the first description of a marine copepod Monoculus finmarchicus, named after its finding off the coast of Finmark province in the northern part of Norway. This species, presently known as Calan~ L.~ finmarchicus, is one of the most, widely distributed representatives of marine zooplaakton in the Atlantic Ocean and adjacent seas. It might be regarded as the most important marine invertebrate; its role in the nutrition of the herring is well known. C. finmarchicus has since been found in other oceans and seas, and this fact has led to the belief that the species is extremely widespread both in the Nor-thern and in the Southern Hemispheres. S. EKMAN (1935) refers this species to the group of cold-water cosmopolitans, a view still shared by some marine ecologists. However, a detailed study of the morphology of,, C. finmarchicus" from different areas of the World's oceans has shown that the concept of a widespread distribution of the species in all oceans and seas is incorrect. C. REES (1949) showed that the two closely related species, C. finmarchicus and C. helgolandicus, which, by the way, he had regarded as two forms of the same species, can be distinguished by the structure of the fifth pair of legs of females.
