The article presents a study focusing on the draft assembly and annotation of the Pneumocystis carinii genome. Results showed that the genomic sequencing and analysis of a non culturable A+ T-rich organism harvested from the lungs of immunocompromised rats proved to be a significant challenge to current genomic technologies and genomic assembly systems. In addition, the initial genomic analysis has putatively identified 20 to 26 eukaryotic transcriptional factors.
