Groups of 175 carp were kept at 22 or at 12°C, with matching control groups; 1 group at each temperature was given 5 mg/kg levamisole every 3 days in pellets for 15 days. Leukocyte numbers, nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction/ml blood, and NBT index in carp 1, 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks after last application of levamisole, and in control groups, are tabulated. At both 12 and 22°C in fish 5 or 10 mg levamisole with food enhanced for 3 months the metabolic and phagocytic activity of neutrophils, and increased the number of phagocytic cells and leukocytes, and the level of lysosyme in serum. Maximum effects were observed 2-4 weeks after the last dose at 22°C, 8-12 weeks at 12°C. It is concluded that this has great importance for prophylaxis in spring and therapy of bacterial diseases, and that levamisole can enhance immune functions in fish.
