The spongioblasts and germinal cells of the neural tube of the chick and pig embryo are elements of a columnar epithelium. The spongioblasts, the tall columnar elements, are interkinetic stages, and the rounded germinal cells near the lumen are mitotic stages of the same cell. An analysis of the stages of mitosis shows that nuclei migrate toward the lumen preceding a division, assuming a sharply pointed form in the process. After division the daughter nuclei migrate from the lumen into the depths of the neural tube wall. The cells of the epithelium are attached to each other at the surface next the lumen by terminal bars. The internal end of each columnar cell contains a diplosome and a structure, the terminal web, which appears to be a network of fibrils passing between the terminal bars. There is no internal limiting membrane other than the cytoplasmic membrane of the cells themselves.
