RESULTS.Both baematoxylin and eosin and tbe ailver proteinate staining gave useful information on tbe formation of tbe nail. Thin sections of footal digits. stained witli baenuUoxylin and eosin demonstrated tliat tbe nail formed from the traditional matrix. In adnlt specimens tbere was no good evidence that the roof of the nail fold contributed more than a very small amount to the nail plate. No evidence was fonnd of true nail foruiatioii from the nail bed distal to the lunula. In some adult toes, under pathological conditions, inatei-ial was added to the nail plate from almost tbe wbole inner surface of the nail fold and also from the nail bed below the visible part of the nail (Fig. 1). This material, comparable to the dorsal and ventral nails of Lewis, superficially resembled nail plate keratin. Howe\er tbo arrangement of tbe cells and tbe staining characteristics clearly showed it to be different. Silver proteinate staining gave a green-blue coloration, which faded into gold, at the level of the matrix. Only the gold colour is said to be characteristic of the intermediate nail of Lewis derived from the traditional nail matrix. The roof and floor of the nail fold gave rise only to keratinized material which stained blue-green. These fiudings confirm aud extend those of Lewis with regard to the tinctorial properties of the nail structure utilizing the silver proteinate method.Stain for sulphydryl groups in adult toes showed the keratogenous zone of (iirond (Giroud and Bnlliard, 1930) near the apex of the nail fold as a homogeneous circular area of< leep blue sfaiiiing eells (Fig. 2) whilst more distally it became a ring. Below the nail plate, a narrow blue band was seen indicating the presence
