Separately labelled (C14 and H3) mixtures of tryptophane were fed to barley seedlings and the resulting labelled gramine isolated. The C14 to H3 ratio in the gramine was the same as the ratio in the tryptophane fed. This suggest that the methylene group is not changed during the conversion of the tryptophane to gramine.
