An extensive series of transduction experiments were done onSh. dysenteriaeand a variety of strains ofBact. coliB, C, W and K12 carrying an assortment of genetical markers. The phages used were P1 and a nutant P1kc. Successful transductions were achieved with a number of biochemical markers, for which selective methods of detection were available. Transduction occurred betweenSh. dysenteriaeand several of the strains ofBact. coli. It appeared that the fertility types of the donor and acceptor strains had no effect upon the ease or difficulty of achieving transductions. With an F- acceptor and either F- or HFr donors the frequency of transduction per phage particle was the same. In experiments with strains ofBact. coliK12 instances occurred where 2 or more characters were transduced simultaneously. The frequency of such joint transductions appeared to be a function of the closeness of linkage between characters. An attempt was made to correlate lysogenization by P1 with successful transduction, but results were obscured by secondary spread of phage liberated from the background of infected cells on the plates.P.
