ORt) INAR~ LV, little attention is paid to airway maintenance, because the upper airway is almost always open. However, the first concern, and an essential step in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, is the maintenance of upper airway patency. Moreover, obstruction of the airway occurs intermittently in a variety of clinical disorders in infants, children, and adults,-9 and recognition of these disorders has generated considerable research. The following is a review of recent developments related to the normal maintenance of upper airway patency and the consequences of pathologic alterations, with emphasis on infants and children.
