Hexagonal close-packed (hcp) Ni nanoparticles with a highly narrow size distribution have been prepared via a thermal decomposition approach using nickel acetate tetrahydrate as a precursor. The particle morphology, microstructure and magnetic properties were characterized by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results have shown that the particle size and shape can be controlled by using alkylphosphine surfactants, and the control of crystalline phase was achieved by adjusting the concentration of oleylamine in the reaction mixture. The formation of metastable hcp crystalline phase favors a low concentration of oleylamine. The magnetic measurements have shown that the magnetic properties of hcp Ni nanoparticles are quite different from those of face-centered cubic (fcc) Ni nanoparticles. A very low magnetization has been observed on hcp Ni nanoparticles.
