Studied the clinical and biochemical effects of levo-methionine (without monoamine oxidase inhibitors) on 5 normal males and 5 female and 6 male schizophrenic patients using a double blind cross-over design. 7 patients showed a clear-cut response to the methionine which was rated as an acute schizophrenic episode. Levels of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG) excretion in schizophrenic patients and normals were compared, and further investigation of the possible elevation in schizophrenia is suggested. Excretion of MHPG or of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxymandelic acid was not significantly increased during methionine administration. One patient showed a marked clinical improvement following methionine administration. One patient showed a marked clinical improvement following methionine, but in the absence of distinguishing features it is concluded that this did not represent a useful method of treatment. Clinical summaries are presented for each of the schizophrenic patients.(22 ref.)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
