The clinically available form of gentamicin is a mixture of 3 components, namely, gentamicins d, da, and C2 [1, 2]. The chemical structure of the components was studied recently at Schering Corporation [3]. At least 2 assay procedures have been published for determining the ratio of the components present in the complex [4, 5], and the Food and Drug Administration has approved limits established by Schering Corporation for the relative amounts of each of the components allowable in the complex [6, 7]. Weinstein and co-workers [1] presented initial studies which demonstrated that the 3 components have nearly identical in vitro activity. They also showed that the acute toxicity as well as the protective activity of the 3 components against Staphylococcus aureus were not significantly different in mice.
