The spectrum of the thermal emission of NO2 at about 1200 K was found to be similar to that of the NO+ 03 chemiluminescence. It is concluded that these spectra are transitions from similar low-lying vibrational levels of the same excited electronic state of NO2 to the ground state. The 0+ NO chemiluminescence and NO2 fluorescence excited by Hg 4358 A radiation involve transitions from higher vibrational levels of the same excited state of NO2 to the ground state. The kinetics of chemiluminescent emission and of overall reaction in the NO+ 03 system have been studied in a flow system at total pressures between 0.8 and 3.0 mm H g and temperatures from 216 to 322 K.
