The laboratory maintenance of this filaria and its transmission by the natural vector Ornithodorus tartakovskyi is described in detail. The microfilariae develop to the infective stage at 29[degree]C in 20-25 days; these third stage larvae will remain alive and infective in the tick up to 203 days. Successful transmission has also been achieved with Ornithodorus moubata. The hamster has been shown to be a satisfactory primary host for D. witei. The distribution of the microfilariae in the tissues of the vertebrate host conforms generally to that found in other filariae except for a higher concentration than usual in the skeletal muscle. Several known filaricidal drugs were tested against the infection; only those containing antimony or arsenic were effective; diethylcarbamazine was inactive against both adult worms and microfilariae. The infection is compared with that of Litomosoides carinii in the cotton rat as a laboratory infection. It is concluded that D. witei is easier to maintain on a small scale but is probably less useful for screening potential filaricides.
