The development of a numerical simulation capabihty using finite-difference techniques for flows about aircraft carrying stores is described. Since a single global mesh a t o u t the aircraft with stores is very difficult t o generate, a multiple overset mesh approach called the chimera scheme is used. In the chimera scheme, a complex configuration such as a wing with stores beneath it is mapped with a global mesh about the main component, the wing, and minor overset meshes are generated about each additional component such as the stores. The minor meshes are overset on the global mesh without matching any boundaries. As such, these minor meshes can be freely moved with respect to the global mesh. and the time-accurate simulation of a moving store beneath a wing is possible without regridding the configuration. The use of the chimera scheme combined with a time-dependent Euler algorithm is shown to be a viable technique for the simulation of flows about separating stores. Tests run in this paper show that the time accuracy is adequately maintained, the bookkeeping routines are capable of tracking the moving grids in three dimensions, and simulation of the flow field aerodynamics is clearly possible.
