The structure of the inner trench slope of the Nankai trough is studied using migrated seismic records to avoid diffraction effects. In the western Nankai trough, the migrated seismic sections show systematic deformation of trench fill turbidites by thrust faults at the foot of the inner slope, forming linear ridges parallel with the trench. The underlying sediments of the Shikoku basin, on the other hand, are subducted and not deformed. The angle of subduction is steeper in the eastern Nankai trough than in the western part. Alternatively, accreted sediment of turbidite origin is subjected to deformation mostly by folding and large thrust faults are localized in the lower section of accreted sediments. No appreciable undeformed layer exists in the eastern Nankai rough.
