THERE is surprisingly little information on the quantitative anatomy of the normal human kidney. With the increasing use of renal biopsy as a diagnostic procedure it is important to know normal values for the number and dimensions of nephrons in man if pathological changes are to be quantified. The present paper is concerned with simple quantitative measurements of both the macroscopic and the microscopic anatomy of the normal human kidney. h’hTERIALS AND METHODSSixty-eight pairs of kidneys (table I) were obtained at necropsy from both males and females aged from birth to 90 yr. All except the neonatal cases suffered a traumatic death, usually in road traffic accidents, and showed no evidence of primary renal or cardiovascular disease.
