The presence of active cilia on the ectoderm of amphibian embryos is familiarly manifested by the rotation of the embryos within the egg capsules. The behavior of these cilia under normal conditions has been described by Assheton ('96) and by Woerdeman ('25); by the former in Rana temporaria and Triton cristatus, by the latter in Rana esculenta and the black axolotl. First appearing about the time the neural folds close, the cilia have their action directed caudally on most of the embryo, creating a corresponding current in the water, or propelling the embryo anteriorly along the dish when removed from its capsule. The present study,'concerned primarily with certain responses of the ciliary action to experimental situations, was made chiefly on embryos of Amblystoma punctatum. After a brief account of the normal activity in this form, the experimental results will be treated under the following headings: determination of polarity of ciliated cells; reversal of ciliary action; effect of curare on ciliary action; and coordination of ciliary action.
