A descriptive series of five retarded adolescents with clear-cut bipolar illness is presented. The authors suggest that bipolar illness is commonly misdiagnosed in retarded patients because of difficulties in eliciting histories of mood change and overemphasis on psychotic and pseudo-organic symptoms.
