By placing discrete, electrolytic lesions in the lateral hypothalamus of albino rats, a well localized area was found bilateral destruction of which is followed by complete absence of eating to the point where the rat dies of starvation. This area is situated in the extreme lateral hypothalamus at the same rostro-caudal level as the ventromedial nucleus. A unilateral lesion is not effective. Bilateral lesions, however, are effective not only in previously normal rats, but also in rats showing hypothalamic hyperphagia and obesity.
