INTRODUCTION Genomic deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) rearrangements in African trypanosomes are essential for the existence of these parasites in the bloodstream of theirmammalian hosts. The relationship of these DNA rearrangements to the way in which trypanosomes evade the immune system has become the focus of considerable research during the past 6 years, with a resultant explosion of both research and review articles. These reports have revealed many interesting and unique features about the evasion mechanism which, never-theless, remains only partially understood. This review, completed in November 1984, will place the findings of the past 2 years into thecontext of earlier information as reviewed by many others (8, 20, 23, 40, 42, 49, 57, 65, 94, 104, 113, 147, 157). In addition, we hope to demonstrate, as have the more recent reviews,'that this biological system is a magnificent example of the application of contemporary molecular biology techniques to a problem of great medical and economic significance for Africa. African trypanosomes evade the immune system of their mammalian hosts by sequentially expressing a series of variable surface glycoproteins or VSGs (90), a process called
