This chapter discusses treatment matching. Treatment matching research is designed to determine if patients with particular individual differences respond differentially to various addiction treatment approaches. In this study, 229 patients (average age 38 yrs) were randomly assigned to one of 3 treatments: brief broad-spectrum treatment, relationship enhancement therapy, or a cognitive-behavioral treatment program. One important matching result from the 18-mo follow-up showed that relationship enhancement therapy was significantly more effective in increasing abstinence for those patients who had a social network unsupportive of abstinence. The authors conclude that patient relationships should be assessed prior to relationship enhancement therapy.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
