Simian virus 40 (SV40) ranks among the most well characterized DNA viruses known today. It has been an invaluable tool both for dissecting the molecular details of eucaryotic cell processes and for the development of recombinant DNA technology. First and foremost, however, SV40 continues to serve as a model for the study of basic mechanisms underlying virus-mediated carcinogenesis.
