The proposition is advanced that studies of fish migration have been impeded by an uncritical acceptance of the hypothesis that a high degree of orientation by individual fish is essential to successful directed migration, by the general absence of quantitative models which yield rigorously-testable hypotheses, and by a concentration of research effort on the behavioral as opposed to the ecological aspects of migration. The need for, and potential advantages of, a change in these attitudes and approaches are discussed.
