The arterial patterns of the upper and lower limbs have been investigated in 146 cadavers. The diameters of the main arteries, the points of origin of the important branches along the parent trunks, the levels of the bifurcations, and any "abnormalities" or variations were noted. In each subject the right and left sides, were recorded simultaneously, special attention being paid to the unilateral as against the bilateral appearance of the variations. A general survey is given of the variations of arterial patterns in the upper and lower limbs. The percentage frequency of the main variations was determined in the present series, and was compared with the percentage frequency as given in the anatomical literature. The results of the investigation are presented in two tables where the main variations are listed, and their frequency occurrence on the right or left side only, or on both sides in individual subjects is indicated. Over the whole range of variations the unilateral frequency occurrence was about double that of bilateral occurrence. In general, an arterial variation may not be expected to be present on both sides, except in approximately 1 out of 3 cases. The adult arterial limb patterns are already established during early fetal existence. In the author''s opinion, variations in patterns must be considered as genetic mutations. Although these mutations manifest themselves independently on the right and left sides, their occasional bilateral appearance is more frequent than can be accounted for as a purely fortuitous occurrence.
