The cell surface glycoprotein fibronectin is characteristically present in fibroblasts and sera 01' various vertebrate species. Similar proteins have been given various names (SF antigen, LETS protein, CIG, CSP, Z protein). Although definite information on their chemical andimmunologic similarities is still lacking, the proteins appear to be largely alike.' In adult17 and embryonic tissue,2 fibronectin is largely confined to basal laminae and extracellular matrix material. It is o u r purpose here to describe the formation of fibronectin as seen by indirect immunofluorescence techniques in different stages of ontogenesis in the mouse and during mouse teratocarcinoma differentiation into structures called embryoid a process that to a certain degree mimics early development.' At present, fibronectin is believed to play a role in the positioning of cells in morphogenctic phenomena and in the maintenance of orderly tissue organization.
