In the literature of anatomy and pathology there are countless descriptions of congenital malformations of the human heart. Similar abnormalities in other mammals, though presuniably quite as frequent, have been recorded far less often. Shaner (’47) has recently reported that on examining the hearts of 15,000 pig embryos for externally visible anomalies, he found 33 which were distinctly abnomial. Thus he has reason to believe that anomalous hearts in the pig occur in greater average frequency than 1 in 430. Olafson (’39), in the course of “some 4.500” miscellaneous veterinary autopsies, counted 15 post-partuni “congenital cardiac anomalies,” but 3 of these were right aortic arches in dogs. Deducting them as arterial rather than cardiac, his average heconies 1 in 450. Xotwitlistancling their abundance, Lilleengen (’34) was able to assemble only 129 cases described in the literature, to which he added 37 of his own. These, with Olafson’s 10,- 176 altogether-were distributed as follows: 97 in cattle, 29 in theAlthongh the essential work for this report was completed while Dr. Wimsatt was a member of the Anatomy Department at the Harwrrl Medical School, a subseqiieiit thorough revision of the manuscript\\as made after he became a member of the Department of Zoology at Cornell TTniversity. Thr yak heart, which is the property of the IHarvard Medical School, has been deposited in the museum of pathology of the Sew York State Veteiinarp College at Cornell University.
