A review of the resource potential and problems associated with low-permeability, tight-gas reservoirs suggests that they contain from 1 to 2.5 times the current US proved reserves of conventional gas. These deposits are likely to contribute substantially to future natural gas markets - perhaps 190-570 TCF, equivalent to 30-100 billion bbl of oil - if economic incentives, including price, are favorable and imporved stimulation technology is available. Considerations in using massive hydraulic fracturing treatments to stimulate tight-gas wells include fracture design, fracturing fluids and propping materials, evaluation of fracture jobs, well testing, and forecasting reservoir performance.
