MethodsParticipant enrollment was approved by the IRBs of Washington University School of Medicine and Missouri Baptist Medical Center. We obtained written informed consent from pregnant women (and their adult household contacts) who had uncomplicated pregnancies and no other children. Each family (N= 37) underwent 4 “newborn visits” in the first 4 weeks after hospital discharge and a visit when the infant was approximately 6 months old. Each time, parents answered questions concerning household demographics, cleaning habits, pets, their child’s daycare attendance, eating and bathing habits, and time spent outside of the home.
