There is no evidence that the commonly used anesthetic agents have any direct effect on coagulation. It can be assumed that the hemodynamic alterations which may occur during general anesthesia may contribute to increased surgical bleeding. The possibility that anesthesia may alter capillary permeability to red cells is unresolved, but evidence to date is unimpressive. Finally, it should be pointed out that the critical experiment, the study of the effect of anesthesia upon the metarteriolar response to injury, remains to be performed.
