While it can be seen that investigators have focused primarily on either the behavioral styles of effective leadership or the personal attributes which distinguish successful managers, there has been a dearth of empirical research which has interrelated these two kinds of predictors of effectiveness. For example, few investigators have reported whether" consideration" is greater among young managers than among older managers. Other researchers have neglected to relate specific managerial styles to specific managerial demographic variables such as income, sex, education, or personality, although Fleishman (1953) and Rossel (1970) have studied managerial level in relation to style variables. The present research is an attempt to isolate and study such relationships, by combining the logic of subgrouping analysis with the managerial styles manifested in an inbasket exercise. Using the responses of 200 managers on an inbasket exercise, subjects were sorted into subgroups of similar behavior styles. Since these groups were composed of managers with relatively homogeneous patterns of responses, they were examined for their affinities to several personal and demographic categories. Thus, the behavior styles represented by membership in a group were related to personal characteristics of the managers in the sample.
