Conclusion Were I Aladdin, and had I his lamp, how would I transform education to meet the crisis that is bound to arise from the effects of the Second Industrial Revolution? My first step would be to get the universities and the schools to develop a common policy to produce educated men who appreciate art, music, and literature, who understand the elements of science and the nature of the world around them, and who possess an interest in the problems of the day. Were I asked for a single reason it would be this. Tomorrow is an age of automation, and automation must mean leisure. The masses tomorrow will correspond to the privileged of yesterday. Hooliganism and other manifestations of endless boredom, or the cultivated enjoyment of leisure?-that will be the important question, at least if one follows Jeremy Bentham’s principle of the greatest good for the greatest number. Grafted on this general education-and only on this-would be the more specialised and more vocational studies of the university. Here the educational progress would be continued in breadth and then, for the best, in depth. Finally, at the graduate level would be that combination of subjects that fits a man for his life’s work-as engineer, manager, banker, &c. This would be designed for those who wished to invest in themselves and their future. They would, as it were, form a corps-d’elite.
