Non‐technical summaryON and OFF pathways are major information processing channels of the visual system, and they begin at the retinal bipolar cell level. Here we show a systematic study correlating light response characteristics and cell morphology of OFF (hyperpolarizing) bipolar cells (HBCs) in the mouse retina. Results from this study provide a description of how rods, M‐cones and M/S‐cones mediate responses in three major types of HBCs, and how synapses in the OFF pathway are interconnected to serve various visual tasks.
