This disease, which appears to be identical with so-called " sway-back " in England and renguera in South America, was first thought to be lead poisoning, and efforts to " delead " the pregnant ewes by providing licks containing commercial ammonium chloride appeared to give promising results. Subsequently, however, when pure ammonium chloride was used, no benefit whatever was derived. Spectrographic examinations of pure and commercial ammonium chloride and of livers from affected and normal lambs then suggested that there was a copper deficiency. The article describes the work undertaken and results obtained in investigating this possibility. It was found that there was, in fact, a very marked shortage of copper in the livers of affected lambs and in the blood and milk of affected ewes, when these were compared with normal ewes. The administration to 12 pregnant ewes of 15 mg. copper in the form of 0.1 % cupric sulfate solution completely prevented the occurrence of ataxia in their progeny, whereas all the progeny of 22 control ewes were affected. The breeding ewes retained on the unsound country develop an anaemia which also responds well to small doses of copper. Curiously enough this anaemia is of the macrocytic hyperchromic variety. The anaemic ewes treated with copper rapidly improved in bodily condition and in general well-being. The copper contents of soils and pastures in affected areas are being investigated. The article gives full details of the methods used and should be consulted in the original. -D. A. GILL.It is suggested that the disease was due to a Cu deficiency in pasture and soil, but this suggestion is not supported by the results of the chemical analysis available.Enzootic ataxia of lambs in Australia is a localized disease with close resemblance to. sway-back of lambs in Britain. The earlier hypothesis that enzootic ataxia was caused by lead poisoning and benefited by ammonium chloride is disproved. Analysis of organs, blood and milk from affected dams and their lambs showed a lower Cu content than in normal tissues and milk. Cu therapy cured anaemia in the ewes and inhibited further development of central nervous system lesions in the lambs. These facts suggest a Cu deficiency in pasture and soil in which the disease occurs, but the limited results of chemical analysis available do not support this view.-A. H. H. Fraser.
