The double-indicator dilution method is one of the nondestructive techniques which have been utilized in the quantitation of extravascular lung water (EVLW) in both experimental animals and humans. It is based on the simultaneous sudden bolus of two indicators, one of which can diffuse out while the other remains in the intravascular space. By subtracting the volume of ditribution of the intravascular from the volume of distribution of the diffusible indicator, the extravascular volume (VE) can be obtained. Given a closed tubular system perfused at a constant flow (Qt), the volume of this system between two points, P1, and Pz, can be calculated by injecting a bolus of indicator in P, and measuring its concentration in time c (t) in Pz as the indicator is leaving the system. Assuming that the indicator distributes homogeneously in the volume (V) between P, and Pz, if all of the indicator leaves the system,
