Microcapsules and microencapsulation techniques have been widely used in various fields involving pharmacy, agricultural chemistry and the chemical industry. For example, a stabilization process of enzymes and living cells, a preparation process of artificial blood cells and a separation process of biological compounds have been developed.12 To the authors' knowledge, however, no application of microcapsules to the separation or concentration of metal ions has yet been reported. The present study was intended to examine the applicability of microcapsules as a new microscopic supporting material of ligands for the extraction of metal ions. Among the various preparation methods of microcapsules ordinarily used, an interfacial polymerization method was adopted in the present study, because small and thin-membrane microcapsules are readily obtained. Some advantages are expected when microcapsules are used as a supporting material of a metal extractant: l) a large specific interfacial area is better for acceleration of extraction rates than that in other membrane extraction systems; 2) both core and semipermeable membranes of microcapsules can be used as independent phases which can support different ligands; 3) separation of the microcapsules can easily be done by means of a filtration or sedimentation method. In this paper some preliminary results are described as a first report on the application of microcapsules to metal extraction.
