Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ)-based gas sensors using each of various carbons as a new sensing-electrode (SE) material were fabricated and their sensing characteristics to nitrogen oxides (NOx, NO and NO2) were evaluated. Among the four carbon-SEs tested, the activated-carbon SE was found to give a high sensitivity and a relatively high selectivity to NO2at an operational temperature of 300 °C. The high NO2sensitivity/selectivity of the sensor was confirmed to be due to a much higher electrochemical catalytic-activity to NO2than those to other gases (NO and C3H6).
