THERE is convincing evidence that some mature chloroplasts can survive in gastropod cytoplasm and mouse fibroblasts1–3, but division has not been observed. Recent observations4have been interpreted as demonstrating divisionin vitro; the morphological integrity of the chloroplasts was lost during division however, and only one cycle of division was reported.
