Drawing on the notions of indexicality and community of practice, this article explores ways in which Japanese employees use English in otherwise Japanese speech in intracultural business meetings at a global corporation in Japan. Previous research on Japanese ideologies about English has predominantly analyzed interview and written text data to understand Japanese native speakers’ attitudes and beliefs about the language; yet how these ideologies are constructed in ongoing interactions is underinvestigated. This study therefore examines the discursive reproduction of ideologies about English speakers through discourse analysis of employees’ use of English during naturally occurring business meetings, and demonstrates how the employees’ orientations to semiotic centers of authority play a vital role in the activation of specific meanings in an indexical field of their community of practice.
