Stars of essentially all masses are known to lose mass during their evolution. The mass loss characteristics at any time are determined by the evolutionary status of the star. The region around a star that is modified by these processes is referred to as the circumstellar medium. In addition to mass loss from a single star, mass transfer and mass loss in a binary system may play a role in determining the circumstellar environment.
