Iluring the last 18 nlonths, the writer 11as coiitiiiuously travelled and studied in Eastt’rn Europe: Poland, the Soviet Union, Czcchoslovakia, Yugoslavia, and Bulgaria. A portion of this time (Xlay and June, 1961) was spent in evaluating the status of gcograpliic teaching and research in the Peopk’s Republic of Hulgaria. The trip was proposed by two Biilgarian geographers, Professor Ignatov Penkov of the Dcpartment of Geography, University of Sofia, and Professor Trnko Jordanov of the Institute of Geography, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. They personally helped with arrangcnients and travelled at times with the writer during his visits to seicntific institiites in Sofia, and on trips to thc hlaccclonian area of Bulgaria, to Plovdiv, Burgas, niid Variia 011 the Black Sea, a~~ d to Trnovo. These trips represent the first time an American geographer has visited Aulgaria since the war.Everywhere that the writer travelled in BiiIgiria, he was well received, and great interest was shown in current Aiiiericnn lifc and American scholarly activity. Schools. factories, aid collccti\~ farms were visited. and in general there was complete freedom of movement despite the strained political situation which has cxisted between Bulgaria and the United States since the war. Geography in Bulgaria, as in the Soviet TJnion and Poland (The Professional Geogru-/) her, March, 1961, pp. 34-36), is conductcd through a dualistic organizational structure: the Institute of Geography in the Bulgarian Academy of Scienccs, and thc Department of Geography at the University of Sofia. All geography in Bulgaria at a professional or university level is concentrated in Sofia.
