Large families of receptor subtypes have now been identified for a variety of neurotransmitters and hormones. There appear to be ten or more pharmacologically distinct receptor subtypes for such important neurotransmitters as acetylcholine, noradrenaline, glutamate, y-aminobutyric acid and serotonin. The evolutionary pressure for the continued existence of so many receptor subtypes that are activated by a single neurotransmitter is not yet clear. However, it seems likely now that multiple receptor subtypes for a single neurotransmitter coexist on a single cell, and that responses to a particular neurotransmitter will often be mediated by combinations of multiple co-existing subtypes. Such a situation would have important implications for the biology of cell signalling, as well as for the development of rational therapeutics based on receptor-specific agonists and antagonists. However, little is known yet about the actions and interactions of multiple subtypes for a single neurotransmitter that co-exist on the same cell.
