This edition of Environmental Hazards provides a critical look at some of the salient challenges and opportunities in linking disaster reduction and development. The long recognised relationship between disasters and development continues to demand more thorough understanding of its nature and changing contexts. Example integrated issues include health crises, environmental degradation, social impoverishment or the effects of climate change to name some. The way these are understood and represented in disaster and development terms influences the adaptation of global economies, communities of practice and individual survivability. Whilst combined disaster and development thinking becomes more acknowledged and institutionalised through global forums, mounting world crises await the new ideas that can deliver transitions to sustainability. It is anticipated that more appropriate development would reduce incidence of environmental, economic and social disaster with disaster risk reduction providing a common and cost effective pathway. However, whilst the processes required may be opportunities more in sight than previous, actions to appropriate scale remain woefully inadequate. This editorial overview flags the need for greater attention to the demands and particularities of applying disaster and development awareness together and in depth. The issues raised here are largely based on empirically derived research findings and field experiences complimented by theoretical drivers that accompany the field. A sample of indicative literature is followed by suggested key action areas that also reflect global predicaments as selected challenges. Conceptual, contextual and practical issues and opportunities are exemplified by the series of papers selected for the edition. Together these papers span questions raised through research, practice and policy linked to disaster reduction and development that emphasise the recurring need to move beyond the current status quo. The editorial identifies that opportunities lie on the one hand in knowledge for integration of science, technology and people centred actions whilst on the other by investing now in the means to safer futures already revealed. The edition exists because combining concepts of disaster with those of development is of immediate practical importance. Solutions to survivability can be driven by motivators of political will, individual behaviour, knowledge and technology. However, contrary to popular representation, both concept and application of integrated disaster and development action remains in its infancy requiring more innovative and radical approaches to unravel.
