A mathematical model for the scattering of acoustic waves from immersed transversely isotropic cylinders was developed by the authors [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 100, 57 (1996)]. Ahmad and Rahman further elaborated on the mathematical aspects of this model and based on mathematical discussions showed that there exist two distinct types of transversely isotropic materials, which they named type I and type II [Int. J. Eng. Sci. 38, 325 (2000)]. They also described the expected behavior of the form functions of such materials. The purpose of this article is to distinguish the physical differences between these two types of transversely isotropic materials.
